Medical Affairs Consortium: Winning Strategies for Successful Thought Leader Management

Author:

In today’s extremely competitive and demanding healthcare landscape, pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device organizations heavily rely on thought leaders to influence the important decisions relevant to their products. Likewise, the Medical Affairs function plays a critical role in meeting current challenges within the healthcare sector.

In order to address the many issues that Medical Affairs executives are facing, Best Practices developed the Medical Affairs Consortium. Consortium members participate in a three-part study that they help in the creation of the theme. The Consortium also consists of three virtual roundtables that allow members to share, question, listen, and seek ideas from peers on various topics and discussion points from each study part.

The third (and final) virtual roundtable of the 2013-2014 Medical Affairs Consortium will be held from 11:00AM-12:30PM (Eastern Time) on Thursday, June 5th. The areas that will be addressed in the roundtable include:

  • Leadership within the Thought Leader Management function
  • Developing & maintaining relationships with Thought Leaders
  • Effective communication channels and leveraging new technologies
  • Innovative strategies to overcome regulatory challenges

Companies participating in the third roundtable include: Amgen, Astellas, Astra Zeneca, Baxter, Biogen Idec, Eli Lilly, Genentech, Merck, Novartis, Pfizer, ProStrakan, Sanofi, Upsher-Smith, and Teva. 93% of the participants are at the director level or above.

As the regulatory environment continues to become increasingly strict, it’s important to fully understand current challenges and how to effectively and efficiently address regulatory issues. This entails leveraging new communication channels and technologies.

From our preliminary analysis of the research collected from the 3rd part of the Medical Affairs Consortium study, we found many key findings regarding the use of new technologies. For example, both the mature market segment and the emerging market segment find online medical/scientific programs and online WebEx conferences/programs among the most valuable new technologies for Thought Leader interactions. Despite this, there were many important differences observed in the value associated with Brand R&D websites between the two markets.
